Rosarito’s cinematic history began in 1997, when the famous 20th Century Fox decided to build the Baja Studios, a monumental complex located on the scenic Tijuana–Ensenada highway near the picturesque town of Popotla. These studios were created with an ambitious purpose: to film the blockbuster Titanic. Giant water tanks were constructed by the sea to recreate ocean scenes with unprecedented realism. The production attracted hundreds of local workers and specialized technicians, temporarily transforming Rosarito into a hive of lights, cameras, and dreams.

DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as global film icons, but also placed Rosarito on the world map as an international filming destination. Since then, Baja Studios has become a go-to location for productions seeking the perfect balance of modern infrastructure, natural landscapes, and competitive costs.
In the following years, films like Pearl Harbor (Disney), Tomorrow Never Dies (MGM), Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (20th Century Fox), and Deep Rising (Warner Bros.) chose this very location to bring their stories to life. Each production left its mark on the city, strengthening the bond between Rosarito and the silver screen.

But the magic didn’t stop at the big screen. Decades later, the famous series Fear the Walking Dead—a spin-off of the global phenomenon The Walking Dead—chose Rosarito as the main location for its second season. Fans of the series could recognize some of the city’s most iconic spots, including the Rosarito Beach Hotel, which served as the backdrop for some of the show’s most dramatic scenes.
Beyond glamour and cameras, what truly sets Rosarito apart is the warmth of its people and the way art has woven itself into the city’s identity. Many locals participated as extras or crew members, and several businesses still hold memories of the days when movie stars walked along the boardwalk or dined by the sea. Over time, this film legacy inspired a new type of tourism: cinematic tourism, inviting visitors to explore the sites where iconic scenes were filmed, tour the studios, and experience the stories behind the productions firsthand.

Today, Rosarito remains a destination where the ocean and creativity meet. Its combination of endless beaches, hospitality, excellent cuisine, and proximity to the border makes it a strategic spot not only for travelers but also for producers, photographers, and artists seeking inspiration.
